Richmond Barthe, Sculptor. 1901-1989
Richmond Barthe was an African American sculptor who was most well known for his portrayal of African Americans in his art. He was associated with the Harlem Renaissance. He lived and worked in Chicago, New York and Jamaica.
What I Learned
Painting:
Paint has Three ingredients
Pigment:Provides color and are usually a fine powder.
Binder: Holds pigment particles together. (Linseed Oil in Oil paints)
Vehicle: Makes paint a liquid. (Turpentine in oil paints and water in watercolor)
Support: Structure underneath the painting. (Canvass, Paper, Wood)
In Class:
This week we reviewed the chapter 6 unit on Drawing and started the chapter 7 unit on painting. We then had a quiz on chapter 7.
We had to Post any painting we chose with an explanation of the 3 ingredients of paint and the support used in the artwork. My submission is posted below.
On Wednesday we had a verbal, in class quiz to list the 7 types of sub-media. Oil, Watercolor, Tempera, Encaustic, Fresco, Acrylic and Air Brush.

Pigments: He started with dull earth pigments, then moved on to pigments like cobalt blue, emerald green and zinc chromate.
Binder: Linseed Oil

Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter who was self taught and most well known for her self portraits. She was active from the 1930's through the 1950's.

Edgar Degas was a French painter and founders of the impressionism movement though he prefered to be referred to as a realist. He started as a historical painter and had great respect for the old masters. I have seen several of his pieces in person and admire his style.
