What I learned

The Purpose and Function of Art:

Art forms as a result of meeting deep and subtle needs as a society.

Art serves public purposes, not personal purposes or goals in its social and cultural context.

The six functions of Art: Delight, Commemoration, Worship and/or Ritual, Commentary, Persuasion and Self Expression.

Art may address more than one need.

Aesthetics is the awareness of beauty or quality.

Idealism represents subjects in an ideal or perfect state.

Six Artifacts, Six Functions

Delight

I chose the painting Dreaming Dubrovnik, by artist Davor žilić, as my representation of the function of delight in art. Partly because it is a beautiful, peaceful painting, and partly because this is my favorite city in the world.

Commentary

I chose this piece by Banksy to represent the function of commentary in art. I think it represents the oppression of creative individuality and dreams.

Worship

I chose this stained glass window depiction of Jesus on a cross as my representation of the function of Worship in art. The cross is one of the most recognizable religious symbols in the world, specifically in Christendom.

Commemoration

I chose the United States Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial), as my representation of the function of Commemoration in art. It is one of the most famous and recognizable war memorials in the united states.

Persuasion

I Chose the "I Want You" Uncle Sam poster by James Montgomery Flagg to represent the function of persuasion in art. This poster was meant to promote patriotism and enlistment in the U.S. Army.

Self Expression

I chose this Jackson Pollock painting as my representation of the function of self expression in art. Jackson was a founding father of the abstract expressionist movement.
