Week Five

This week, we had to make a project, containing at least five of the elements of art, focusing on "Who I Am". I chose to use images cut from magazines and make a montage. I then used acrylic paints to blend the sections together. Unfortunately, I applied an acrylic paint lacquer to the finished product which bled through and the back side of the clippings leeched through. Below are the before and after pictures of the finished work. I used the cutting of the bow hunter and of the deer to represent the fact that I am a hunter. The clipping of the man holding a fish is to represent that I am a fisherman, and the clippings of the garden are to represent that I am a gardener. I try to eat as much food I grow or catch myself as possible. It is a big part of my life.

What I Learned

This week we continued to study the visual elements of art, and began studying the principles of Design. The seven key principles of design are:

Unity and Variety

Balance

Emphasis and Subordination

Directional Forces

Contrast

Repetition and Rhythm

Scale and Proportion

I will define these principles and what we learn about them next week.

Corey Feldmans "Performance" on the Today Show

This bizarre performance, for better or worse, was an expression of his artistic vision. We may not always understand or enjoy someone else's art or art form, but it is, nonetheless, art.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini

Gian Lorenzo Bernini was a 17th Century artist, best known for his sculptures, but was also an acclaimed architect and painter. He did many commission pieces for the catholic church during the Italian Baroque. He lead a fascinating life, and at one point after discovering his brother and his lover were having an affair, attempted to kill his brother and disfigured his lover.
